Since the ancient Greeks, people have been trying to improve health. Calling it hacking is just putting a techy, 21st-century name on it. Biohacking is having a moment, it's a trend. But it’s hard to separate the bona fide claims from the bogus ones. From butter-enriched coffee to transhumanists—who implant magnets and computer chips in their bodies. Nonetheless, who wouldn't want an optimal brain health? We all want to look younger, become stronger and healthier and live longer.
Neurosimulation to manage stress
Finally... It has arrived! Worlds first neurostimulation device for VR headsets. Developed by Fisher Wallace Labs (a 10-year-old medical device company), Kortex™ is a neurostimulation device for VR headsets that manages stress and sleep. Kortex™ stimulates the brain to produce serotonin and melatonin while lowering cortisol (the stress hormone) and modulating the brain's default mode network.
I was among the firts few hundred to back this project in Indiegogo. I don't yet know if this is just one of those bogus gadgets but I'm an absolute sucker for anything promising to improve my sleep or stress levels. What convinced me to donate my dollars was the result of years of scientific and clinical validation. Kortex™ uses the same technology as the Fisher Wallace Stimulator™ which was cleared by the FDA to treat anxiety, insomnia and depression. Access the research here.
Let the human experiment begin
Will this miracle gadget upgrade my brain and reduce stress? I'll be putting it to the test for the next 4 weeks together with our MelloVR app. I'll be using my Oura-ring to track sleep. MelloVR provides me the VR headset with relaxing content and stress measurements. For best results, Kortex™ should be used once or twice a day for 20 minutes.
Boy oh boy do I need better sleep. I might be the perfect candidate to see any affects of the device. According to Oura I get only 2-7% deep sleep every night, where 15-25% would be ideal. I've even seen some people enjoying 35% of deep sleep. What sleeping steroids are they on? Braggers gonna brag I guess. I would be happy with the 15%.
We'll know the results in 4 weeks. I've tried every sleep hack out there before this (without any success) so I've got high hopes. Can't wait to give you the latest updates on my human neurostimulant experiment. Just follow this blog to stay tuned...
This is how my usual sleep cycle looks like in Oura.
